Beyond Forest to Sea: Sonoma Coast Teen Backpacking Camp

Sonoma Coast State Park | Willow Creek Watershed

CAMP 1: June 18, 2019  8 AM to June 21, 2019  3 PM

CAMP 2: July 30th, 2019  8 AM to August 2nd, 2019  3 PM

Join Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods for an exciting four day summer program combining learning, leadership & inquiry in the outdoors! Beyond Forest to Sea trekkers get to explore nature, make new friends, do projects, and experience three nights of tent camping at Sonoma Coast's Pomo Canyon. Activities will take place in Sonoma Coast State Park. Topics will include leadership, backpacking skills, survival skills, as well as topics in ecology, geology and history in the context of our beautiful parks.

The Great Beyond River Camp Info

  • Leader: Hutton Wade
  • For children/students 13 to 15 years of age as of June 1st, 2019 
  • Cost is $300 per child (scholarships available)
  • Environmental and outdoor education led by trained Stewards Docents, Naturalists and Staff                 
  • Parent/guardian drop-off and pick-up required
  • Backpacking gear available for loan

Guerneville, Rio Nido, Jenner, Bodega Bay and Russian River residents are encouraged to apply!

 THE GREAT BEYOND RIVER CAMP

By Land & By Sea, Adventure Camp

What: Hike, Climb, Swim, Kayak

What to bring: Warm days- Light to mid-weight clothing. Cold nights- Fleece, Jacket, rain jacket/ windbreaker. Gear bag: swim wear, towel (suggest quick drying), water container, hiking boots, water shoes, hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, sunglasses, nature journal & pencil. Optional: swim goggles

Camp 1:  Tuesday, June 18, 2019    Camp 2: Tuesday, July 30th, 2019
 

10AM Drop Off, July 30 (Casini Campground)

4PM Pick Up, Aug 2 (Shell Beach on Sonoma Coast)

Transportation may be available upon inquiry,

Objective: Introductions and Ice Breaker Activities

Plan:

  • 10am campers arrive and convene for introductions, instructions, and ice-break activities.
  • Kayak to Willow Creek Campground
  • Lunch break
  • Tent camps erected
  • Free play and games.
  • Groups (A,B,C, etc) are created with 5-6 campers & 2 adult leaders each and given camp work assignments.
  • Hike and Scavenger Hunt
  • Dinner
  • Campfire program

Camp 1: Wednesday, June 19, 2019     Camp 2: Wednesday, July 31st, 2019

Objective: Land and Water Activities

Plan:

  • 7am Wake up. Breakfast Crew prep, morning nature walk
  • 8am Breakfast and briefing
  • 9am clean and secure camp. Go to activities
  • All activities will begin with instruction and end with a debrief and reflection period.
  • Group A- Kayaking, swimming
  • Group B: Hiking, climbing
  • Group C: Land navigation and primitive skills class
  • 3pm Groups reconvene at Willow Creek camp for rest, mixer games
  • Dinner and campfire time

Camp 1: Thursday, June 20, 2019       Camp 2: Thursday, Aug 1st, 2019

Objective: Land and Water Activities

Plan:

  • 7am Wake up. Breakfast Crew prep, morning nature walk
  • 8am Breakfast and briefing
  • 9am clean and secure camp. Go to activities
  • Hike to Pomo Canyon Campground
  • All activities will begin with instruction and end with a debrief and reflection period
  • Group A-Hiking, climbing
  • Group B: Land navigation and primitive skills class
  • Group C: TBD                
  • 3pm Groups reconvene at Pomo Canyon camp for rest, mixer games
  • Dinner and campfire time

Camp 1:  Friday, Friday, June 21, 2019     Camp 2: Friday, August 2, 2019 

Objective: Land and Water Activities

Plan:

  • 7am Wake up. Breakfast Crew prep, morning nature walk
  • 8am Breakfast and briefing
  • 9am clean and break camp. Go to activities
  • Hike to Shell Beach
  • All activities will begin with instruction and end with a debrief and reflection period
  • Group A- Land navigation and primitive skills class
  • Group B: Hiking, climbing  
  • Group C: TBD
  • 3pm Groups reconvene at Shell Beach
  • Final circle 

Camper pick-up 4pm from Willow Creek Campground

This itinerary is a living plan and may change between now and the beginning of camp, final itineraries will go out to participants one week prior to the start of camp.
