Description: Cochineal is a female scale insect that lives on prickly pear cactus plants native to Central and South America. Crimson, fuchsia, raspberry, orange and scarlet reds can be created from cochineal. In this workshop, Mary will guide you through the process of dyeing a piece of silk with cochineal. A few different dye techniques will be demonstrated: immersion, dip-dyeing and resist-dyeing. You will also learn to create a few different shades of cochineal using added ingredients or other dyes to brighten or sadden the color. No previous natural dye experience required. You will be able to take home your naturally dyed piece of silk cloth.
