Marine Education Van - Steward Ship
Stewards' Mobile Marine Education Van (Steward Ship) is available for school visits. In 2015-16, Stewards developed a mobile marine education center out of a plain white step van. The exterior has been wrapped in a beautiful, colorful graphic that depicts the marine ecology on Sonoma Coast including a large gray whale, harbor seal, intertidal creatures, seabirds and the coast redwoods, which are notable on our stretch of coastline. The interior includes an LCD screen for showing videos, backlit interchangeable interpretive displays, space for displaying skulls, pelts and bones and other items for visitors to touch and feel.
Docents are trained to conduct interactive activities with your students with a focus on the intertidal, marine debris, seabirds, marine mammals and more.
There is a charge for bringing the Steward Ship to your school and scholarships are available when funding is available. Please apply for a scholarship.
Additionally because demand is high for programs, scheduling can take up to two weeks, reservations are best made two to three weeks prior to the date desired. Please also note that Spring is extremely busy and we are usually fully booked, if you would like a Steward Ship visit in March, April or May we recommend making a reservation up to (or more than) 6 months in advance as we have the capacity to a maximum of 3 to 5 school visits per month.
