VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:
PUBLIC ASSISTANCE PATROL

Austin Creek Volunteer Programs:

Austin Creek Volunteer Overview
Public Assistance Patrol
Trail Crew (Stewardship)

Volunteers are needed to Patrol the 20 miles of trails in Austin Creek SRA on foot an horseback. This program is very flexible and volunteers are encouraged to hike at their own pace and a distance that suits their time and ability. New patrol volunteers are mentored with an experienced volunteer until they are ready to go out on their own.

Mounted Assistance volunteers go through an evaluation that includes their horse. After passing the evaluation, Equestrians are encouraged to ride with experienced riders until they feel comfortable and know the backcountry trails well.

Public Assistance Volunteers are outfitted with:

  • a radio to report an emergency
  • water for hikers who may not have enough
  • field guides and maps to offer directions or information about the flora and fauna

Volunteers are trained on how to handle emergencies and what action to take in their role as first responders.

New volunteers are required to attend a General Volunteer Orientation.
